On this Fourth of July, please take a moment to remember that Freedom Isn't Free
Jul 04, 2009
Sometimes we get swept away in the Fourth of July celebrations - the fireworks shows, the parades, the barbecues - and forget the significance of this day. Many Americans gave their lives for our country, so you and I and our children can live in freedom. I hope each and every one of us will pause for a moment today to remember those brave men and women of the US military whose sacrifices made it possible for us to enjoy today's festivities. Say a prayer for those in our Hawaii 'ohana who continue to battle against the forcers of injustice and intolerance - the Kaneohe Bay Marines who recently were sent to Afghanistan, the 100th/442nd citizen soldiers in Kuwait, and the thousands more who continue to do us proud and take to heart the "Go For Broke" spirit. Even a gesture as small as saying "mahalo" to a man or woman in uniform, giving a heartfelt salute to a veteran proudly wearing a baseball cap, or sending warm smile to a military spouse or child you see at the Mall, can mean a lot.
The photo in this entry is of Glenn Gomes of the 100th/443nd and Robert Arakaki of the 100th taken before the 100th/442nd soldiers left for their 2nd deployment to Iraq.
