The life of a Yellow Tang
Mar 23, 2009
Depends on whether it ends up in a mainland tank or gets to stay on the reef. It's taking a while to sink in.... I recently learned that Yellow Tangs can live for 40+ years on a reef... that it's common to find 20 - 30 year olds... I had no idea. Now, I'm even more determined to keep them out of the aquarium hobby. Our coral reefs are facing such incredible pressures that we may loose them entirely in the next 50 years - The generation of Yellow tangs born this coming summer may be one of the last to live out its full natural lifespan - unless we take steps to protect and restore the reefs. Keeping millions of reef animals here rather than shipping them out is a good start. I believe that when Hawaii residents learn about how our reef animals are being used, they will come together to help stop the use of our reef animals in the aquarium hobby trade.
