I will stop buying products that are packaged in plastic. I will continue to inspire others to buy a reusable bottle and to bring their own reusable shopping bags. These are very simple changes that can make a difference!!!!

Call to Action: Make Our Voices Count 2010

Each year, the Legislature makes hundreds of laws that shape our future. Many of us want to get involved in this democratic process, but it's hard to know where to begin. This campaign makes it easier for members to identify important issues, learn about them, and get involved. We'll create action opportunities in March and April. Here are the ways to take action and be counted:

1. START by voting on a few issues (now with a LIVE FEED of bill status updates).
2. Attend a workshop on how the Legislature works.
3. Attend a hearing, submit testimony, or add your voice to letters by Kanu staff.
4. Participate in actions at the Capitol organized by Kanu (stay tuned).

Public education in Hawaii does not need rescuing, it needs love and respect.

Remarks of February 1, 2010 to the Social Science Association: The public schools in Hawaii are not failing, however dramatic the headlines to that effect always are. The reality is that the public schools of Hawaii produce thousands and thousands of graduates every year who join their predecessors as the bedrock of this community. Most of the people in traffic with you, at the shopping centers with you, at the movies with you, went to public schools. Most of the people who work at Hawaiian Electric, First Hawaiian Bank, Bank of Hawaii, Alexander and Baldwin, or the State of Hawaii went to public schools. If they were failures, we would be in the midst of anarchy and chaos or we would be moribund.
